All of us at ARTECONTEXTO would like to congratulate Antoni Muntadas, who yesterday received the “Velázquez” Visual Arts prize, awarded by the Ministry of Culture.
Muntadas is, without a doubt, the living Spanish artist who is best known abroad, and his work is key to the interpretation of our time from a perspective centred on revealing the mechanisms which rule the media, the control exerted over individuals in the developed world, and the way fear is instilled in societies ruled by democracies which we define as solid.
Muntadas, who has lived in the U.S. since the 1970s, is extremely active, not only in terms of his specific art and research projects, but also with significant teaching work, in the form of workshops, seminars and conferences all over the world. He won the National Visual Arts Award in 2005, and, that same year, he also represented Spain in the Venice Biennial, with one of the most solid pavilions in years, and, certainly, our best representation to date.
